PILLAR 1: COLD WATER THERAPY
What would you say if I told you that making a tiny modification to your normal routine could absolutely change your life? What would you think if I told you it only took 2 minutes? And that the cost is just about zero if you already have running water?
And what if all you had to do to facilitate that life change was to get cold?
While we aren’t exactly sure why, we know that our BAT (brown adipose tissue)--the stuff in your neck and upper torso that generates heat--is only really activated when exposed to cold. This can boost your resting metabolic rate by 25-40% while you are in the shower, which is significant.
How many calories could you burn over the course of a year this way, even if just for short durations?
PILLAR 2: FARM-TO-TABLE NUTRITION
This has been the single most important dietary change that I have ever made in the quest for a leaner, healthier physique. And that is why I have made it the second pillar.
I think that this one behavioral shift has the potential to heal millions of sick people, reduce the tremendous strain on water in drought-plagued places like California, and improve cognitive function in the afternoon.
Time will tell on that, but I’m working on it.
For now, eating a plant-based mid-day meal means a serious dose of nutrients and minerals by way of ultra-fresh produce every day. This won’t just make you feel great and give you tons of energy.
You’ll also be covering your nutritional needs daily, and swapping sandwiches and junk for fresh vegetables and healthy fats will make you look better naked.
And we all want that!
PILLAR 3: MEDITATION
Like cold water therapy, meditation has been around for thousands of years, and the research and data is finally catching up. Meditating regularly is more important now than ever.
Most of us choose to bombard our brains with information and distractions for 10-12 hours per day, and disconnecting from that seems incredibly challenging.
When you add a bunch of other additional chaos—high stress levels, uneven diet, poor sleep quality, etc—you end up with a cocktail of powerfully negative factors affecting your mental state.
The true value of meditation, the immediate benefit of this ultimate work-in-progress, is taking the time to step outside of that chaos whenever you choose. That’s why this is the third pillar.
Shake off your mind's version of you for a moment and analyze it. Because if you don't, you will be completely dominated by it and forced to live in the reality it creates.
PILLAR 4: 30-MINUTE WORKOUTS
I have trained an extremely broad range of clients, from the morbidly obese to professional soccer players, and with very few exceptions, peak exercise performance does not exceed 30 continuous minutes.
And so, 30-minute workouts are the fourth and final pillar.
For the record, most people who spend more than 30 minutes in the gym are usually doing so because they enjoy being in the gym or are resting A LOT.
If that does not describe you, then you’ll be happy to know that you can begin to work toward the ultimate version of yourself without being at the gym at all, and for no more than 30 minutes when you are training.
